Changing Your Email

Renewly uses a secure two-step verification process to change your email address:

  1. Go to Account Settings → Profile
  2. Enter your new email address
  3. Click "Change Email"
  4. Check your new email address for a verification email
  5. Click the link in the email to open the confirmation page

Why Two-Step Verification?

Our email change process uses a confirmation button (not just a link) to ensure enterprise email security systems don't accidentally consume your verification token. This works with all email providers including Mimecast, Microsoft Safe Links, Barracuda, and Proofpoint.

Security

How signing in works

Renewly is passwordless. Every sign-in uses one of these methods:

  • Magic link - enter your email address and we send you a one-click sign-in link. No password to remember or steal.
  • Google, GitHub, or Microsoft - sign in using your existing account with one of those providers.
  • Passkey - use Touch ID, Face ID, Windows Hello, or a hardware security key. The fastest and most phishing-resistant option. See Passkeys.

No passwords

Renewly does not use passwords. If you previously had a password, it has been removed. Sign in with a magic link or a connected provider instead.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Add an extra layer of security to your account with time-based one-time passwords (TOTP). 2FA is optional when you use a passkey (passkeys are inherently two-factor), but recommended for magic-link and OAuth sign-ins.

Setting Up 2FA

  1. Go to Account Settings → Security
  2. Click "Enable Two-Factor Authentication"
  3. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app
  4. Enter the 6-digit verification code to confirm
  5. Download and save your recovery codes in a secure location

Compatible Authenticator Apps

2FA works with any TOTP-compatible authenticator app:

  • Microsoft Authenticator (iOS, Android)
  • Google Authenticator (iOS, Android)
  • Authy (iOS, Android, Desktop)
  • 1Password (with TOTP support)
  • Bitwarden (with TOTP support)

Recovery Codes

When you enable 2FA, you'll receive 10 one-time recovery codes. Each code can be used once to access your account if you lose access to your authenticator app.

  • Download the recovery codes immediately
  • Store them in a secure location (a secrets vault or a locked physical location)
  • Each code can only be used once
  • You can regenerate codes at any time from Settings
Important: If you lose both your authenticator app AND your recovery codes, you will be permanently locked out of your account. Store recovery codes securely.

Logging In with 2FA

Once 2FA is enabled, you'll need to provide a verification code after signing in via magic link or an OAuth provider:

  1. Complete your usual sign-in (magic link or Google/GitHub/Microsoft)
  2. Open your authenticator app
  3. Enter the 6-digit code for Renewly
  4. Click "Verify" to complete login

Disabling 2FA

Disabling 2FA requires an active session verified at the second factor (AAL2). You will need to provide a current 6-digit code from your authenticator app to confirm:

  1. Go to Account Settings → Security
  2. Click "Disable Two-Factor Authentication"
  3. Enter a current 6-digit code from your authenticator app

Passkeys

Passkeys let you sign in with biometrics (Touch ID, Face ID, Windows Hello) or a hardware security key - no email link needed. You can enroll multiple passkeys and give each one a name so you can tell them apart.

See the Passkeys help page for a full guide on enrollment, login, naming, and revoking passkeys.

Other Security Features

  • Active Sessions: View and manage logged-in devices
  • Login History: See recent account access

Renewly uses analytics cookies (Apollo, Microsoft Clarity, and Google Analytics) to understand how the product is being used so we can improve it. Essential cookies - including those needed for authentication, billing, and live chat - are always on and cannot be turned off.

When you first visit Renewly you are shown a banner where you can accept or reject analytics cookies. You can change your choice at any time:

  1. Go to Account Settings → Account
  2. Scroll to the "Cookie preferences" card
  3. Click "Manage cookies"
  4. The banner reappears and you can make a new choice
Your preference is stored in a first-party cookie called cookie_consent. Clearing your browser cookies will reset your preference to "not yet chosen" and the banner will reappear on next visit.

API Keys

Renewly provides a public API for programmatic access to your contract data. Manage your API keys from the Settings page.

Creating an API Key

  1. Go to Settings → API Keys
  2. Click "Create API Key"
  3. Name your key (e.g., "CRM Integration" or "Reporting Dashboard")
  4. Optionally set an expiration date
  5. Save the key securely - it is shown only once and cannot be retrieved later

Save Your API Key Immediately

Your API key is displayed only once when created. Copy it and store it in a secure location such as a password manager or encrypted secrets vault. If you lose a key, revoke it and create a new one.

Revoking API Keys

You can revoke any API key at any time from Settings → API Keys. Revoked keys stop working immediately. We recommend revoking keys that are no longer in use or that may have been compromised.

For full API documentation including endpoints, authentication, and code examples, see the API Documentation.
